THE BAC LOGISTICS JOURNEY
A successful short-term project ignited a passion that perpetuated what BAC is today
BAC Logistics was established when current Founder and CEO, Broughton Amiss (originally from Natal), with extensive retail management experience was called to Johannesburg International Airport to assist a failing duty-free outlet in 1998.
The project saw immediate success resulting in more than triple the revenue growth in just 3
months. The then owner of the duty-free outlet offered Broughton a permanent position in
Johannesburg within the company. Broughton relocated to Johannesburg and thereafter was
also appointed as the Chairman of the Merchants' Association, heading up the Retail
Division at OR Tambo International Airport.
After winning multiple awards and growing an already established and well-known reputation
for retail consulting services, Broughton Amiss was approached to assist an existing retailer
within the duty-free terminal that had been forcibly closed by Customs & Excise at OR
Tambo International, due to failure to comply with required legislation relating to operating a
duty-free bond store.
In assisting the store to reopen and continue its daily operations, the relationship resulted in
BAC’s first duty-free client. Managing the bond store registers and ensuring compliance only
grew the demand for services from other duty-free outlets at the airport. BAC's growing client
base and successful administration of services received the recommendation from ACSA as
a preferred service provider in this field. This accolade resulted in the creation of the original
BAC Duty-Free & Bonded Warehousing business, handling Customs administration for
imports, exports, and bond-to-bond transfers. It remains a successful division of BAC
Logistics today.
This created the opportunity to open a freight forwarding division within the already
established BAC group - now known as BAC Air & Sea Freight.
As a natural progression, BAC expanded further and acquired even more trucks for transportation of both its own as well as third party goods. The combination of service offerings enabled businesses to import, export, Customs clear, warehouse, and transport products seamlessly and conveniently and thereby creating more demand for BAC services outside of the airports. This incredible innovation commanded business from Africa, aunching yet another division known as BAC Transport.
After many challenges were overcome, the cross-border trucking division doubled not only their fleet and load size but also their revenues in a mere 12 months.
Our continuous focus on service excellence and offering an end-to-end solution has further diversified our business with another division, High Value movements. This division handles various specialised vulnerable and high value cargo.
It is important to realise that as much as our business has diversified and grown through the decades, so have operational processes and technologies within the Customs clearing, freight forwarding and transport industry. Having endured an era of handwritten documentation and the process of keeping hard copies, we embraced the digitaltransformation of the industry and are now completely paperless and continue to work towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
